How to Clear the CFP® IFP Module in the First Attempt

Here's What We've Covered!
The Integrated Financial Planning module is two separate hurdles, and candidates underestimate the second one. The CFP® exam is a three-hour multiple-choice paper. The Financial Plan Assessment asks you to build a complete financial plan for a client case, submitted in Excel and PDF and marked by a panel of practising CFP® professionals. Passing the first is a study problem; passing the second is a practice problem.
The two components
| CFP® final exam | Financial Plan Assessment | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | 3 hours, two sections: 25 standalone questions + 25 case-study questions | A full written financial plan in Excel and PDF |
| Tests | Integrated knowledge and judgement | Applied construction of a real plan |
| Marked by | Automated | A panel of practising CFP® professionals |
| When | Bimonthly — Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep, Nov | Alternating monthly cycle (see below) |
| Order | Either first — your choice | Either first — your choice |
| Deadline | Both within 6 months of paying the bundle fee | Same 6-month window |
What the exam actually weights
| Topic | Weightage |
|---|---|
| Financial Planning (process & standards) | 25% |
| Integrated Financial Planning | 15% |
| Investment Planning & Asset Management | 10% |
| Retirement Planning | 10% |
| Tax Planning | 10% |
| Risk Management & Insurance Planning | 10% |
| Estate Planning | 10% |
| Personal Financial Management | 10% |
Note where the weight sits. The planning process and standards carry a quarter of the paper — more than any single technical domain. Candidates who revise investments and tax while treating the process as common sense lose the largest block of marks available.
The calendar you must plan around
This is the part worth writing down.
| Stage | Timing |
|---|---|
| CFP® exam fee window | 1st–5th of the exam month |
| CFP® exam date | Typically a Monday between the 19th and 24th |
| FPA case study released | 10th of alternate months (Feb, Apr, Jun, Aug, Oct, Dec) |
| FPA submission | 8th–10th of the following month — about 30 days to build the plan |
| FPA results | Around the 18th of the third month |
Two consequences. You have roughly 30 days from case study to submission — which is not long to build a full plan for the first time. And with a six-month bundle window against a bimonthly exam and an alternating FPA cycle, there are only a handful of viable combinations. Map them before you pay the bundle fee.
Why the Financial Plan Assessment catches people
It is not a longer exam. You’re producing a professional deliverable: goals, cash flow, investments, insurance, retirement, tax and estate, integrated into one coherent plan with recommendations a real client could act on.
What separates passes from resubmissions:
- Structure over volume: A clear, logically ordered plan reads better than an exhaustive one.
- Show the working: Assumptions — inflation, returns, life expectancy — should be stated and defensible, not buried in formulas.
- Answer the client’s actual goals: Marks come from addressing the case, not from demonstrating everything you know.
- Build two or three full plans first: This is the single highest-return preparation, and it cannot be crammed in the 30-day window.
Before you can enrol for IFP
- All three Specialist certifications completed.
- The Psychology in Financial Planning course finished.
- The FPSB Global Ethics course — required before you sit the CFP® exam.
- Everything inside the three-year limit from enrolment.
What a retake costs
| Retake | Fee |
|---|---|
| CFP® exam (standalone) | ₹12,900 |
| Financial Plan Assessment (standalone) | ₹12,000 |
| Bundled (both, first attempt) | ₹25,000 |
Failing both once costs roughly the bundle price again — and with results arriving on a two-month lag, it also costs a quarter of a year.
