US CMA Scholarship: Eligibility and How to Apply

Here's What We've Covered!
The US CMA typically runs Rs 2-2.5 lakh all-in once you account for IMA fees, study material and coaching (see our complete cost breakdown for the detail) — which is exactly why IMA runs a genuine scholarship program for high-achieving students. Before walking through the application process, it’s worth knowing precisely what’s on offer, since the value varies quite a bit by program.
What You Actually Get If Selected
IMA’s main student scholarship covers meaningfully more than a token discount:
- Free IMA membership for three years, removing the annual membership fee entirely for that period.
- The US CMA entrance fee, covered in full.
- The complete exam package, including exam fees, course content and study materials for your first attempt.
- Mentorship and access to professional programs, plus the kind of industry exposure that’s hard to get outside a structured program.
Combined, that’s a meaningful share of the full Rs 2-2.5 lakh cost covered — which is worth knowing before you decide whether the application effort is worthwhile.
Who’s Eligible
- 10 slots per year: awarded to high-achieving students from IMA-endorsed schools, who can choose either the US CMA or the FMAA (Financial and Managerial Accounting Associate) track.
- 3 additional slots: reserved for students nominated from IMA Partner schools.
- Full-time enrolment required: this scholarship is for current students, not working professionals or graduates — you need to be actively enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program relevant to finance or accounting.
- Preference for third-year (junior) students: if you’re pursuing a standard bachelor’s degree, applying in your third year is the sweet spot.
Check IMA’s official Higher Ed Endorsement Program page to confirm whether your university qualifies as an IMA-endorsed or partner school before applying.
How the Nomination Actually Works
- It starts with a faculty nomination: scholarships are awarded based on nominations from your professors or department chair, not direct self-application in most cases — so make your interest known to faculty early.
- Universities can nominate in batches: as a full group, smaller groups, or individually throughout the year, but total nominations from any one university cannot exceed 5 students per academic year.
- Special process for India and neighbouring countries: if you’re studying in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh or the Middle East, your department chair needs to submit a letter on official letterhead confirming the selected nominees.
The Application Itself: What You’ll Need
- A nomination: from your university principal or HOD — PhD students can nominate themselves.
- The official application form: downloadable from the IMA website.
- Academic transcripts: to demonstrate your grades meet the bar.
- A letter of recommendation: from any staff member or teacher.
- A resume: covering your educational background, extracurriculars, and any work experience.
- A personal essay: explaining why you want the US CMA, why you’re a strong candidate for this scholarship specifically, and what your future goals are.
The application window runs September 1 to June 30 each year. Indian students should submit applications directly to indiascholarships@imanet.org — check the exact deadline online well before it closes, since IMA doesn’t extend it for late submissions.
4 Other US CMA Scholarships Worth Knowing About
- IMA Century Scholarship: $7,500 (paid in two $3,750 installments) plus a CMA scholarship, awarded to students who demonstrate leadership and a genuine commitment to a management accounting career.
- Stuart Cameron & Margaret McLeod Memorial Scholarship: up to $5,000, plus free registration, travel and lodging for an IMA conference, and a mentor for ongoing professional guidance.
- CMA Doctoral Scholarship: waives exam fees entirely for students in an accredited doctoral program in management accounting or financial management.
- IMA Research Foundation Doctoral Scholars Program: a separate research-funding award of up to $10,000 for doctoral students focused on management accounting research — distinct from the CMA Doctoral Scholarship above, so check which one actually fits your situation.
7 Tips for a Stronger Application
- Read the eligibility requirements twice and note down everything expected of you before you start.
- Track the deadline carefully and submit well ahead of it, not on the day it closes.
- Get input on your application content from professors or industry professionals before finalising it.
- Line up two or three strong letters of recommendation from teachers or employers.
- Start your personal essay early and get it reviewed by others before submitting a final draft — this is the part reviewers weigh most heavily.
- Build a checklist for every required document and tick items off as you go, so nothing slips through.
- Proofread everything for grammar and factual accuracy — you’re competing against applicants worldwide, and small errors stand out.

FAQs
Are Indian students eligible for US CMA scholarships?
Yes — any Indian student can apply for the main IMA scholarship or the additional named scholarships, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria and follow IMA’s nomination process.
How much does the US CMA actually cost if I don’t get a scholarship?
Budget roughly Rs 2-2.5 lakh all-in at current rates — see our complete cost breakdown for exactly where that money goes.
Do these scholarships cover all certification costs?
The main IMA scholarship covers IMA membership (3 years), the entrance fee, and the full exam package for your first attempt — a substantial share of the total cost, though not necessarily coaching or extended study material if you choose those separately.
Can I apply directly, or do I need a nomination?
For the main scholarship, you generally need a faculty nomination from your university’s principal or department head — PhD students are the exception and can nominate themselves.
Is financing available if I don’t get a scholarship?
Some Indian banks, including SBI, offer education loans that cover professional certification courses like the US CMA — worth checking with your bank directly on current terms.
Is the US CMA hard to pass even with a scholarship?
The exam difficulty doesn’t change based on funding — roughly 45-50% of candidates pass each part globally. A scholarship removes the cost barrier, but you’ll still need genuine, structured preparation to clear it.
