What is Wealth Management? Meaning, Services and Cost in India

Here's What We've Covered!

Wealth management is a comprehensive advisory service for people with substantial assets — combining investment management with tax, estate, retirement and succession planning under a single relationship. It differs from financial planning mainly in scope and client size: planning sets the strategy, wealth management runs the whole financial life around it.

What wealth management actually covers

A wealth manager coordinates every part of an affluent client’s finances rather than selling one product into it:

Service What it involves
Investment management Asset allocation and portfolio construction across equity, debt, alternatives
Tax planning Structuring holdings and withdrawals for post-tax efficiency
Estate and succession Wills, trusts, and transferring wealth across generations
Retirement planning Corpus targets and income drawdown strategy
Risk and insurance Protecting assets and income against downside events
Specialist coordination Working alongside the client’s CA, lawyer and banker

The defining feature is integration. Any adviser can recommend a fund; wealth management is the discipline of making six moving parts work together for one household.

Why the market is expanding so fast in India

  • HNI numbers are climbing: India has over 850,000 individuals with assets above USD 1 million, a figure projected to approach 1.65 million by 2027.
  • Assets are moving into financial products: Wealth management AUM is expected to roughly double from USD 1.1 trillion in FY24 to USD 2.3 trillion by FY29.
  • Wealth is decentralising: Tier-II and Tier-III cities — Jaipur, Pune, Indore — are emerging as genuine wealth hubs, not just metros.
  • Advisers haven’t kept pace: India has just 3,534 CFP® professionals and 932 SEBI-registered Investment Advisers to serve it.

That last line is the whole story: the money is multiplying considerably faster than the people qualified to advise on it.

Wealth Management vs Financial Planning vs PMS

These get used interchangeably and shouldn’t be:

Financial planning Wealth management Portfolio Management Services (PMS)
Focus The plan across all goals The client’s full financial life Managing an investment portfolio
Typical client Any income level Affluent and HNI HNI (SEBI minimum ₹50 lakh)
Scope Strategy and structure Strategy, execution, coordination Investments only
Regulation CFP® certification; SEBI RIA to charge for advice Depends on services offered SEBI-registered portfolio manager

In practice, financial planning is the method; wealth management is a service tier built around it; PMS is a product that may sit inside it.

Who is it for, and what does it cost?

Wealth management is generally aimed at clients with investable assets from roughly ₹50 lakh upward, though thresholds vary widely by firm. Below that, comprehensive financial planning usually delivers the same discipline at lower cost.

Charging models differ, and the difference matters:

  • Fee-based — A flat fee or a percentage of assets under advice. Requires SEBI RIA registration, and an RIA cannot earn commission on products recommended to the same client.
  • Commission-based — The adviser is paid by product manufacturers rather than by you.
  • Bank or private-banking relationships — Bundled into the broader banking relationship.

Always ask which applies before engaging anyone. It’s the single most useful question a prospective client can ask.

How to choose a wealth manager in India

  • Check the credential: CFP® certification is the global competence benchmark for financial planning; FPSB India publishes a public directory of certified professionals.
  • Check the registration: SEBI RIA registration is legally required to charge for investment advice.
  • Ask about the process: A professional working to a standard can walk you through how they collect information, analyse it, recommend, implement and review. One who opens with a product is selling.
  • Ask who else they work with: Good wealth management coordinates with your CA and lawyer rather than operating in isolation.

Wealth management as a career

The supply gap that makes this service scarce also makes it a strong career. Wealth managers in India earn around ₹5.2 lakh on average at entry, rising to ₹8.2 lakh in Delhi and well beyond at large firms — IIFL reports ₹20 lakh for senior wealth roles.

CFP® certification is the credential the sector hires against, and FPSB India’s Authorized Corporate Partners include State Bank of India, IDFC FIRST Bank, HDFC AMC, Motilal Oswal and Bajaj Capital.

FAQs

What is wealth management in simple terms?
A single advisory relationship that manages an affluent client’s entire financial life — investments, tax, estate, retirement and risk — rather than selling individual products.

What is the difference between wealth management and financial planning?
Financial planning is the process of building a strategy across your goals. Wealth management applies that process at a larger asset size and adds execution, coordination and ongoing management.

How much money do you need for wealth management?
Typically ₹50 lakh or more in investable assets, though thresholds vary by firm. Below that, comprehensive financial planning is usually the better-value route.

How are wealth managers paid in India?
Through fees charged to the client (requiring SEBI RIA registration), commissions from product manufacturers, or as salaried employees of a bank or wealth firm. Ask which model applies before you engage.

Is wealth management worth it?
It earns its cost when there are genuine moving parts — business ownership, property, multiple income sources, succession questions. For simpler finances, financial planning delivers most of the benefit for less.

What qualification do wealth managers need in India?
No single licence governs the title. CFP® certification is the global competence benchmark, and SEBI RIA registration is required to charge for investment advice.

  1. Wealth managers are crucial in this effort. They give tailored financial advice to those with complex money needs. They help create plans for investing, cutting taxes, managing risks, and planning estates. These plans match the client’s goals, needs, and how much risk they can take. CFOs also play a big part by using their financial knowledge and strategies to handle tough economic times and reach goals.
