How to Clear the CFP® Specialist Modules in the First Attempt

Here's What We've Covered!
The three Specialist exams are the most predictable part of CFP® certification — 75 MCQs, two hours, no negative marking, and published topic weightages that tell you exactly where the marks sit. Most first-attempt failures come from studying the modules evenly instead of to weightage, or from booking an exam before the education requirement is complete.
What each module actually weighs
| Module | Topic | Weightage |
|---|---|---|
| Investment Planning Specialist (IPS) | Personal Financial Management | 45% |
| Investment Planning & Asset Management | 40% | |
| Regulatory Environment, Law & Compliance | 15% | |
| Retirement & Tax Planning Specialist (RTPS) | Retirement Planning | 51% |
| Tax Planning | 49% | |
| Risk & Estate Planning Specialist (REPS) | Risk Management & Insurance Planning | 51% |
| Estate Planning | 49% |

Two things jump out. IPS is not primarily an investments paper — personal financial management carries the largest share, and candidates who skip it to focus on asset classes lose marks cheaply. And RTPS and REPS are near-even splits, so neglecting the second half of either is a direct route to a retake.
Which order should you take them?
You choose the sequence. Three sensible approaches:
- Start with the module closest to your day job: Working in insurance? Take REPS first. In banking or mutual funds? IPS. An early pass builds momentum and confidence.
- Start with IPS if you have no finance background: Personal financial management is the most intuitive entry point, and it’s 45% of that paper.
- Leave RTPS for when you have time: Tax is the most detail-heavy content in the Specialist set and rewards uninterrupted study.
Each Specialist module carries its own FPSB certification on completion — so you accumulate credentials as you go, rather than waiting until the end.
Module-level tactics that work
- Study to the weightage, not to the chapter count: A 15% topic doesn’t deserve a third of your time because it happens to be difficult.
- Learn the calculator and spreadsheet early: Both are permitted — a financial calculator with cleared memory, plus an on-screen spreadsheet (Scratchpad on Mettl, OpenOffice at DEXIT centres). Fluency is worth marks under time pressure.
- Two hours, 75 questions — roughly 95 seconds each: Practise under timed conditions or the clock will surprise you.
- Never leave a blank: No negative marking means a guess strictly beats an omission.
- Use mocks diagnostically: Score under exam conditions, then spend revision on what the mock exposed rather than on what you enjoy revising.
The rules that catch people out
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| 30-day registration minimum | You must be registered with FPSB India for 30 days and have completed the module’s education before you can sit its exam |
| Self-study 70% gate | On self-study you must score 70%+ on FPSB’s course tests to become exam-eligible. Fail twice and FPSB moves you to instructor-led education anyway |
| Retake cost | ₹8,000 per Specialist exam attempt |
| Specialist certification fee | ₹11,000 for IPS + RTPS + REPS on completion |
| Three-year clock | All education and exams must finish within 3 years of enrolment |
| Exam scheduling | Registration opens in the Learning Centre after education completion — check the FPSB exam calendar for dates |
The 70% gate is the one most people don’t see coming. If self-study fails twice, you end up paying for coaching regardless — having already paid for the self-study route.
What comes after the Specialist exams
Clear all three and you can enrol for Integrated Financial Planning — the CFP® final exam plus the Financial Plan Assessment, where you build a complete client plan in Excel and PDF. That stage is applied rather than recall-based and needs a different kind of preparation.

FAQs
What is the CFP® Specialist exam pattern?
Each of the three Specialist exams is 75 multiple-choice questions over two hours, computer-based, with no negative marking. A financial calculator and on-screen spreadsheet are permitted.
In what order should I take the Specialist exams?
Your choice. Start with the module closest to your work experience, or with IPS if you have no finance background.
How much does a Specialist retake cost?
₹8,000 per attempt, which is why mock discipline before booking matters financially as well as academically.
Is there negative marking in the Specialist exams?
No. Attempt every question.
Can I clear the Specialist exams through self-study?
Yes, but you must score 70%+ on FPSB’s course tests to become exam-eligible, and failing them twice moves you to instructor-led education.
Do the Specialist modules give me a certification on their own?
Yes — each carries its own FPSB Specialist certification, awarded as you complete it.
